As a race, Avians have ancient Laws that are obeyed no matter what clutch you belong to. However, every clutch has their own heritage and traditions that are singular to their geographic locations and social behaviours.
The three major clutches are the Crow clutch, the Cormorants, and the Eagles. The three minor clutches are the Thunderbird clutch, the Swans, and the Ravens. Each minor clutch lives on the same continent respectively as their major counterparts. Each clutch have a traditional style of dress and type of nest, but players are not limited at all to tradition, it’s just a starting point for those who’ve never played, or a matter of pride for veteran Avians. Please see the "Some Things You Should Know" thread.
The main clutch in Beyond is the Crow clutch, having more Avians than any other clutch. They are more fierce, more headstrong, and more suspicious of strangers. They also tend to have more Hunters than common members of the clutch, and few Royal Consorts. They are very clannish, but very loving to their own. Artists abound and their music is the sweetest to be heard among all Avians. Crows are natural teachers, and make outstanding martial arts experts. The rookery of the Crow clutch is the largest of any Avian breeding ground, and all Crows who do not live offworld lay their eggs there. I play the Queen, James, the King’s Mouthpiece, is no longer an npc, and the Lawgiver is a chara I play. The Mouthpiece for the Queen was Subtle when she was in her Forsaken Blackbird incarnation (see Subtle’s history ), but was consumed, so there is no current Mouthpiece for the Queen.
The Thunderbirds, the minor clutch that lives in Murder Cliffs, are a small band of Avians that are very mystical and seldom seen or heard from. Their alchemists rival even Subtle, who is currently the most powerful adult “Crow” alive, and actually sought them out years ago for mystical training and guidance. (James and Shadow, her twins from her first marriage, are actually the most powerful Crows alive, but have only just reached the age of Choosing and Shadow sang her First Song to Bjairn Bjornson, a Red Dragon, to whom she is now engaged). Shadow also sought training through them, and has more occult knowledge than her mother, but not as much practical magic. If they were a larger clutch, they’d be a major one instead of a minor one, but Thunderbirds are not inclined towards procreation. They view it as a necessity only to be utilized to provide more neophytes for their rituals. It’s rumoured that they are going to have a direct hand in the end of the world when the time comes. There are currently no players in the Thunderbird clutch, all positions are available.
Cormorants are unique among Avians in that they are the only seagoing culture (beyond the recently rediscovered Penguins,) and their skin is a pale blue instead of any other traditional humanoid hue. They have the misfortune of living on the only continent where Raiders congregate when not hunting or feeding. The cliffs are riddled with caves where Raiders dwell, so out of necessity, Cormorants have become the most successful Avian hunters of them. Easily the most easygoing of all the clutches, Cormorants have a lust for life. They love wine, women and song, and enjoy meeting new species. They are a large clutch, second in size only to the Crow clutch, but that is mostly due to interspecies membership. There are currently two players in the Cormorant clutch; all positions except King and Queen are available.
The Swan clutch, the minor clutch that resides in Corbetts du Mer, are the most beautiful of all Avians, and have egos to match. Many a poor Cormorant youth has been shot down by the icy coldness of a lovely Swan girl. They tend to keep to themselves, and absolutely refuse to allow non-Avians to become members of their clutch. They are a bit more ruthless when it comes to the Law concerning consuming deformed offspring; they consider physical imperfection a deformity, even things as minor as crooked teeth, asymmetrically shaped heads, or excess body hair. They don’t inbreed, but they do refuse to allow members to marry anyone who is not a Swan. All positions except King and Queen are open.
Eagles are the most intelligent, intellectually inclined Avians. They are a noble breed, but are kind and gentle. They do not have many Hunters, disliking physical violence, and they have many second clutch Kings and Queens, who are really mentors they admire. Many of the original ancient Laws were drafted by Eagles, and so cleverly done that they were adopted without much resistance by all clutches. They are the smallest major clutch because they have a select amount of “breeders” who provide the clutch with heirs, so the rest may focus on academics. There are currently no title players in the Eagle clutch; all positions are available.
Ravens are a superstitious clutch, and have an intense distrust of change, outsiders, and even Dragons. They keep to themselves, and live life as the ancient Crows do. Contests of Law are rare and considered odd, since no one ever invites change. They breed, but do not discuss it, especially not with outsiders. They have no particular outstanding talents or features, other than the fact that their eggs are the most beautiful of any egg ever lain by other Avians. As part of the Naming Ceremony, they paint their eggs with natural dyes, ornate works of temporary art that make their rookery enviable. All positions except King and Queen are open.
Penguins are a clutch that were lost to history, rediscovered after the War. More information about them can be found in the Ocean Life board.
