Penguins do not use a typical Krai staff. Instead, they are given bone fetishes after their Rite of Passage. The fetish usually depicts a symbol of their strength or courage, and is transmutable. It can be turned into any useful item for hunting, IE, a net, staff, spear, knife, or whatever else.
The Lawgiver carves all of the bone fetishes for the new Hunters. Whenever the current Lawgiver dies, however, the fetishes become useless and disintegrate, and all Hunters must be carved new fetishes by the new Lawgivers. Fortunately, the Penguin Clutch is small and this is usually not that large of a task, though it does take some time.
Penguins may also carve their own weapons, such as knives and spears. Ropes are difficult to come by, as the best are made of the long hair of the children which is cut off at the Rite of Passage (it is never cut until this time, so is usually quite long) and primarily used in sewing together or decorating parkas or blankets. The hair is extremely strong and durable, neigh indestructible, so there are no worries of anything ever coming undone. It has been tradition for some time now that the parents give a knife or spear to their child after their Rite of Passage, so the new Hunters always have a weapon handy.
