There are essentially two kinds of fey; members of the Seelie and Unseelie courts. All susceptible to the same basic laws of fey physiology, Guardianship, banes and basic needs, the division is essentially one of alignment.
The Seelie court is commonly seen as "the good guys," though the fey don't share our black and white views of good vs evil. As often as not, the Seelie fey are just as capable of misdeeds as the Unseelie, they're just not as inclined towards mayhem and chaos as their counterparts are. There tend to be more Guardians in the Seelie court than the Unseelie court, mostly because the Unseelie have bigger fish to fry than to worry about protecting something or someone. That doesn't mean there are no Unseelie Guardians, just that they're rare. The Seelie court includes but is not limited to "regular good" faeries, muses, light elves, elementals, sages, gnomes, dwarves, and yes, even pixies, though there are several clans of "regular faeries" who consider pixies an unruly, lesser race this side of the Unseelie. While the Seelie fey are known for their generosity, helpfulness and wisdom, they are also particular about how they are remunerated; that is, if you respect them properly, they'll do you no ill. If you disrespect them, Heaven help you.
The Unseelie court includes all manner of chaotic, malevolent or simply lost creatures, such as "regular bad" faeries, goblins, trolls, bogeys, water hags, incubi, sucubi, and yes, pixies. It is perhaps the Unseelie pixies who give the good ones the bad name. These beings aren't absolutely evil, for they are simply the balance of the Seelie courty; forces of nature created by a dreaming earth. That said, while they don't do evil deeds for the sake of being evil, they are definitely not beings the average traveler can deal with and come away unscathed. Some of these creatures are mindless monsters, fulfilling fleeting needs with no mind for their victims, not remembering faces or names. Some are seductive, vain, and will leave you longing for them long after they have left you by the wayside. Some are simply destructive and annoying. But all in all, if you regard them with a healthy amount of respect (and keep a healthy amount of distance from them,) you can avoid harm at their hands.
