Note: The types listed below are some the more common types you see. These are by no means limitations, and probably not even all the categories out there. Keep in mind, though, there are only certain things you can do with each group.
Common Types of Villains
- Vengeful-- Motivated by Vengeance, these villains often have been wronged--or believe themselves to have been wronged.
- Possessed--These villains rarely possess evil intentions--rather they are controlled by one of the other villain types and forced to do their bidding. Generaly, most possessed villains rarely remember what they were forced to do. Note: Except for rare cases (Excluding characters with weak willpower), it takes a very strong villain with strong mental power to control someone. Likewise, the stronger someone's willpower is, the harder it is for them to be controlled.
- Insane-- This is pretty self-explanatory. Villains of the insane type are generaly so insane that they can only focus on one goal at a time. This is usually copuled with anger or hatred to make a formidable foe--Insane villains rarely have anything to lose, which make them one of the most dangerous types. Some, however, retain their mental capacity.
- Forced--Like the Possessed, this villain type is also forced to engage in various evil activities against their will, but unlike the Possessed, they are aware of what they are doing. In most cases, the villain who is forceing them provides the character an ultimatum such as blackmail or threatening loved ones. Most Forced villains are individuals with exceptionally strong wills who cannot be controlled by Possessions, however, as always, there are exceptions. Note: Many Forced and Possessed villains were formerly protagonists.
- Ambitious--Ambitious villains usually become villains to satiate their thirst for power. In common cases, the villain offers them a taste of power in exchange for servituted and he like. Villains of this category continue to climb up the success ladder and are never satisfied being a subordinate. Some may also have a specific goal--such as to become a ruler of a specific nation or maybe even to rule the world.
- Common Antagonist--The Common Antagonist is only a villain in the loosest sense. They are considered villains because they directly oppose and influene the protagonist but generally have no other goals. Other names for this type are the Bully and the Antihero. In some cases they can be considered rivals of the protagonist, but exactly what role the Common Antagonist plays is relative to the situation. This, of course, allows for many variations, offering countless possible characters.
- Pure Evil--This type is probably the most deadly type--except for maybe the insane--because no matter how hard you look there is no shred of light. Pure Evil villains are impossible to fully control, but rarely rebel if you are helping them to accomplish their goal. Example: Unseelie Syleen
- Pleasure Seeking--Pleasure Seeking villains are ones whose goal is to satisfy their thirst for any pleasurable activity. They can never be faithful to anyone or anything, and rarely stay on task. To be Pleasure Seeking villains, though, they have to have a malevolent streak in them.
Others: - Observers--Observers are generally neutral in most situations. however, I've included this type in the villains category because Observers, excluding True Observers, rarely stay Observers for long and when they cease merely observing, they do so in order to either join the villains or the heroes (any person who is up against the designated antagonist/villain)
