I little early for posting, but I felt the overpowering urge to curse in the least profane way possible. (That and the fact that this board needs more activity)
Over the weekend my computer's hard drive decided to switch itself off, and due to the fact that it hasn't had a single problem in its 7-8 years of use the system disk has become lost. Along with losing the ability to use my computer, I have also lost a collection of files. Including but not limited to the first chapter of the story I've been writing, the word document for my character and the debating speech that was due the day after it crashed, and this happened at around 10pm. And so after spending virtually the entire night coming up with a new speech (Got to love volantery insomnia) I then find that our second speaker seemed to have just vanished forcing us to lose by default, for the second time (She seemed reliable enough). (Origionally we were to alternate until our first speaker disappeared without a word during the first debate in the competition.) (Same here)
*Wonders if he will get a pair of warnings for the slight personal attacks*
Oh, and as a side note why am I not able to make threads? It just seems to be that you need to be able to make your own areas in the RP boards, doesn't anyone own a house of some sort that they'd like to use?
Oh, and I havent been having any luck with my dreams either, I can still remember and continue them, unfortunatley I am still unable to set myself concious triggers while unconcious.

Welcome, lol, it's not often a new member jumps right in and posts on the Venting boards first. We addressed some of this information in im, but what we didn't cover, I will attempt to clarify for you here. You are not able to make threads in some areas because this is a homebrewed system with very specific rules. If I haven't been lax, I do believe I state within the boards which areas are free for member threads and which are not. Mainly, if it's ic, chances are you may not create your own thread, with a few exceptions. OOC tends to be the area we let you guys run free, lol. As for making your "own areas," in the rp boards, that would be Dwellings/Lodges/Nests, and you must read the rules there in order to be granted your own place. Most offworlders are guests of the Dragon royalty or individual Avian clutches. If they want a permanent residence, they have to come up with some way to become useful members of society, and appeal to the royalty of the land they want to settle in for a place. Thank you for your questions, feel free to ask further questions in the proper thread worldofbeyond.proboards74.com/index.cgi?board=chat&action=display&thread=1133316797&page=1#1133316797 or in a pm to admin.

Ahh, this board brings back so many memories, the place where my first Beyond post took place, it's a wonderful place in which I can express my distaste at the Political structure of my country and one of the recent bills that has been brought forth, more specifically the electoral finance act.
This act is an obvious restriction on free speech by prohibiting any private spending to promote a party, as well as limiting the amount of money a party is allowed to spend advertising themselves.
How was this act passed you might ask, this was passed due to problems with the party voting percentages. Due to the fact that the only 2 major parties are the National and Labour parties. In addition, pretty much all but one minor party has sided almost unconditionally with one of these parties, and the scales are not at the point at which this party is a deciding factor. In most cases (Such as what happened with the electoral finance act) labour writes up a bill and it is almost always approved by parliament by them using their allies to force it through.
However, National has gained from this as New Zealanders have clearly seen the bill for what it is. National has recently been placed at above 50% in multiple recent polls. They would know that to do anything similar would result in them losing the next election, however, this greater than 50% share of seats would mean that any bill the produced would automatically be passed, and any bill another party brings forth that they didn't agree with would automatically be thrown out. While they would not be able to bring forth anything that would outrightly lead to a revolt such as say, abolishing the other parties, minor laws could be passed with only dissatisfaction being shown, however, when the actions of the alternative are viewed, they will know that the alternative is even worse. What about the other neutral party? This is a odd topic, as while they may not side with either of these parties, that is because they already hold their own agenda, they have their views focused on a single ethnic population of the country, this causes additional problems.
A better alternative would be a restoration of the old FPP system which was a messed up vote to change from anyway, this might possibly lead to a greater number of people in the minor parties, and as their numbers grow, they will likely develop a greater sense of independance, meaning that they will not all simply follow the route preached by the government in power and future unjust laws will be thrown out rather than being passed and causeing thousands of people to protest against it.

Is this an issue that can be affected by voters? I'm afraid I'm rather ignorant about your country's political structure, but if a law is slated to be passed here (at least, supposedly) that our citizens really will not stand for, they may contact their congressmen and petition to prevent it being passed.

While we are able to go to our local member of parliament to complain about things like this, there comes the problem of that MP being either too fearful to go against the party's origional descision, or too stuborn to accept it. There are quite a few who are neither, such as Nick Smith who stands up for pretty much anyone who feels that they have been unjustly treated, but he is only a single voice in the party. The way that the voting works is that the leader actually casts the vote for the entire party, presumably after deliberation within the actual party. Unfortunately most of the minor members of the party will not go against their leader due to their precarious position as they are afraid about being removed, in addition, the leader may be extraoridinarily stuborn, as has been shown by the current primeminister Helen Clark (Although National's two most recent leaders were pretty good in this regard).
There is als0 the threat of corruption within the party, this has been demonstrated by several high ranking members of the labour party ie: Helen Clark using her position to force her driver to break New Zealand speeding laws blaming it on him when it was discovered, or when she used the government leader's fund to fund the labour campaign, thereby breaching electoral spending bills, having a law passed to make it legal when it was noticed, and Philliph Field who used his position as minister of imigration to allow people access to New Zealand when they shouldn't have been able to enter in exchange for working for him at prices far below the country's minimum wage level (He was then kicked from the party by Helen Clark when this was discovered. Hypocrite, I would suggest that she leave the party herself were it not for the fact that whoever takes her place might very well be just as bad.).
Also, as I have stated previously, the majority of the minor parties have a lot at stake under Labour. (Such as Winston Peters [The leader of the New Zealand First Party} who seems to dislike foreigners quite a bit becomeing the minister of foreign affairs, and completely messing up the free trade deal with the US.) This majority allows them to force through pretty much an law they want; the example I gave of the electoral finance act was pushed through when they saw that they were slipping behind in the polls and was used as a way of granting them an advantage in the next election, unfortunately they miscalculated, realising too late that other people were not completely idiotic and saw it for what it was, a political restriction granting the government greater suprmacy at the expence of the country's freedom of speech.

Sounds about as ugly as some of the politics/politicians here in the States. I wish I could offer more than condolences. I must say, though, this does put a damper on my intent to work in an NZ animation firm. I don't know if I ever told you, but I had been looking into finding work in NZ after graduating college. I have a few friends there, and the undeveloped lands look amazing. (Not that the cities look so bad either, lol, I just love back country.)

Oh, it should be ok I've met several members of the national party and they all seem to be focused on what is best for the country, and most polls have them placed as winning the next elections. Any comments on them were mostly theory, and honestly, their leader is actually very nice. I just don't like the idea of being able to put through pretty much anything you feel like, even if I'm sure that they wouldn't.

No kidding! No one likes to feel like they're being led by people who are above the law.

ok i have had it, a guest decides to post some form of code that really screwed up my pc when trying to access the villian pole page, i like to look and read some of the things that have happened in the past, sometimes its just my memory that needs refreshing, sometimes its just idle curiosity, either way i should be able to do so without my computer freezing up..so after several attempts i finaly managed to get to the posts that this guest made and deleted them, so i think perhaps it might be prudent not to let those who cannot be held accountable for their actions post anywhere in this site. guests dont care if they get banned or warned, tho how they would get banned or warned is beyond me, but they can simply access the site on a different com and do it all over again, hence my suggestion, i hope you all will agree with me.
